The Hunt for the Best Search Engine

There are over fifty well known search engines and no telling how many in the making. Many claim to be the biggest, best and most popular on the web — even if they aren’t. Seems like everyone has their favorite and you might have to try a few before you find the right one. Here are several of the top contenders to help you decide.

1. Google is a giant and is currently the most popular search engine in the world. Many other search engines have tried to take its place, but Google’s simplicity and speed make it easy to use so people stick with it.

2. Yahoo is the second largest, but they aren’t worried. Google and Yahoo share notes (and search data) sometimes, so Yahoo isn’t likely to disappear anytime soon. Yahoo has been around so long, its good reputation alone will keep people who like it coming back.

3. Go.com is a family-friendly search engine — made by Disney. It’s more of an Internet portal now, providing lots of fun and interesting information every time you log on.

4. AltaVista is an older search engine that is powered by Yahoo. It has lots of search options and includes Babel Fish for translating international websites.

5. Hot Bot is another older search engine, but it’s very alive. It is now just a face for Ask.com, Iygo.com and MSN search. It’s nice that they put them together.

6. Cuil is known as the “Google Killer” though it has yet to kill Google. It was developed by ex-Google developers, ex-AltaVista developers and a few more exes from IBM. It indexes three times the information that Google does and claims to be the largest search engine out there.

Whatever search engine you use, keep looking because there are always more if you can’t find what you need. Just remember that the Internet is humongous but in the end, almost everything is powered by Yahoo or Google.
